Which Pre Workout Is Right For You? The All Inclusive Guide

Posted by Bridget on May 19th 2020

We get it all the time; you want an awesome pre workout, but you don't know all the details about what you want. There are so many choices out there and you don't know what's good and what isn't. Everything about supplements can be a bit overwhelming at first, but especially in the incredibly loud field of sports nutrition. Here is our breakdown of our favorite pre workouts, ranked by caffeine content from low to high. You can also watch the video version of this on our YouTube herehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0_3KrQAJpU

Non-Stimulant Pre Workouts

Noxygen: Purus Noxygen has been a top-seller at Eddie's for several years, and it's easy to see why. It's a simple yet effective add on to a stimulant pre-workout, and there's no denying that Hydromax Glycerol helps draw and retain water into muscle cells, resulting in the pump everyone craves. It's also unflavored and dye-free, a huge plus.

High Volume: High Volume is a stimulant-free pre workout that contains ingredients for pump and for focus, meaning you get all the good stuff but without any caffeine. It is dosed effectively with l-citrulline, arginine nitrate, agmatine, taurine, and Hydromax. This means it's great if you already consume caffeine earlier in the day, if you workout in the evening, or simply if you prefer to avoid stimulants. It also tastes amazing--our favorites are sour green apple and cotton candy.

Low Stimulant

Amino Energy: Amino Energy has been another top-selling product at Eddie's for years, and for good reason. This is a great pre workout supplement for beginners, cardio-based workouts, or those wanting to avoid tons of unnecessary stimulants and ingredients. It's got 100 mg caffeine--about the equivalent of a cup of coffee--but can be dosed up to 4 scoops for 200 mg. It also contains a BCAA and essential amino acid blend and beta alanine, making it a solid all-in-one pre-workout, and a great bang for your buck. The flavors are also delicious, and with over 15 different options. They also now make it in a carbonated ready-to-drink can that tastes even more delicious than the powder (but not as cost effective, of course!).

Mid Range

Prolific: Yet another PEScience product that we love. Prolific contains the same "pump" ingredients as High Volume, but with 160 mg caffeine per scoop (320 caffeine if you take two scoops). This product provides a great, clean energy without any crash from being too stimulant-heavy. And the flavors do pair with High Volume, if you REALLY want to get that extra pump! Again, we love the sour green apple and cotton candy. We also love how this contains l-theanine and rhodiola to help with stress and performance.

Tennessee Pre: This locally made product has been an instant favorite of Eddie's. We can't think of a more all-in-one product, especially if your goals are to gain lean muscle mass. It's got your caffeine at that perfect mid-range dose (250 mg), creatine HCL, BCAAs, glutamine, and more. And while there are currently only two flavors available, they are both amazing.

High Stimulant

Koala Freak: This product, created by the well-known fitness competitor and social media personality, Calum Von Moger, is fully loaded with both pump and nootropic-focused ingredients. The flavors aren't anything special, but the formula makes it worth it, in our opinion.

Black Market Cuts, Bulk, Tone: Black Market has done a great job at taking your goals a step further and catering to the individual. With 330 mg caffeine per scoop, they definitely fall on the high stimulant side, so if you are a stimulant junkie or need lots of caffeine to get going, this is a great option. Cuts and Tone contain l-carnitine and raspberry ketones for an extra thermogenic effect (and trust us, you will get an extra sweat going on!). Bulk contains clinically proven KSM 66 ashwagandha and 450 mg magnesium, which work to help boost testosterone and help with muscle recovery. The flavors are awesome, especially the limited edition ones (blue lemonade, the current option, is delicious).
